Stamped concrete is an ordinary slab with colour through it or on it and a texture pressed into the surface while it is still plastic. The premium over a plain broom finish pays for the colour, the release agent, the mats, a larger crew working against the clock, and the sealer that keeps it looking like the sample. It is the finishing, not the concrete, that you are paying extra for.
Choose a backyard stamped concrete patio pattern from real slabs
Photographs flatten texture and lie about colour. Ask for addresses of finished work of the same age, in the same weather, and go and look. A pattern that photographs beautifully at three months can look very different at three years, and only a real slab will tell you which yours will be.
Colored concrete patio work: ask how the colour is being put in
Integral colour is mixed through the load, a colour hardener is broadcast onto the surface, and an antiquing release adds the secondary tone. They wear differently: colour through the slab survives a chip, colour on the surface does not. Get the method written on the quote.
Agree the crew size for the pour
Stamping is a race against set. A crew too small for the area will be stamping concrete that has gone off, and the pattern will be shallow at the end of the pour. Ask how many people are coming and how the slab will be broken into pours if it is large.
Get the joint plan with the pattern plan
Control joints have to go somewhere, and on a stamped slab they either follow the pattern or fight it. A good contractor shows you where the joints will be before the pour and works the pattern around them. A crack that appears where no joint was cut is the alternative.
Budget the cost to reseal stamped concrete from the start
Stamped work is sealed, and the sealer is what holds the colour and the sheen. It wears, it can haze, and it needs redoing periodically. Ask what product is being used, what it costs to reapply, and whether the contractor does that work, because the answer is part of what the finish costs to own.
Replacing stamped concrete walkways and patios on a claim
Where a stamped patio or walkway is destroyed in a covered event, the replacement should be priced as the finish that was there rather than as plain concrete, and that is an argument you win with evidence. Keep the original contract naming the pattern, the colour and the sealer, and photograph the finished work when it is new. Carriers price what can be documented, and a decorative finish nobody recorded tends to be replaced with a broom finish.
Questions people ask about stamped concrete patio cost
How much more is stamped than plain concrete?
It is quoted as a premium per square foot on top of the slab, and the premium grows with the number of colours and the complexity of the pattern and the borders. Ask for the plain price and the stamped price on the same quote: the gap is the decision you are actually making.
Does stamped concrete get slippery?
Sealed surfaces can, particularly when wet and particularly on a slope or around a pool. Grit additives are mixed into the sealer to deal with it and should be specified at the start rather than added after somebody falls. Ask for it explicitly on pool decks and steps.
How often does stamped concrete need resealing?
It depends on sun, traffic and the product, so the honest answer comes from the contractor who chose the sealer. What matters is that you know before you buy that resealing is part of owning the finish, and roughly what it will cost, because that is the part of the price that arrives later.
Can existing patio concrete be stamped?
Not directly, because stamping happens while the concrete is plastic. A stamped overlay can be applied to a sound existing slab and it is a different product with a different lifespan. Any contractor offering to stamp your existing patio should be explaining an overlay, and if they are not, ask.
How much does a 20x20 concrete patio cost?
At 400 square feet you are past the worst of the setup share, so the rate is better than a small pad and the total is still mostly labour and base. Ask for the price with and without a decorative finish, because that premium is where quotes diverge.
How much does a 20x20 stamped concrete patio cost against plain?
The slab is the same slab; the premium is the pattern, the colour and the extra crew the pour needs to finish before it goes off. Ask for both numbers on the same drawing rather than a single figure.
