4 ton AC unit cost, and what tonnage really decides
Tonnage is the one specification buyers shop on and the one most likely to be wrong on the system already installed, because a ton is a unit of capacity - 12,000 BTU of cooling an hour - and the number a house needs comes from its insulation, glazing, orientation and air tightness rather than from its floor area.
Tonnage is a capacity, not a size of house: one ton is 12,000 BTU of cooling an hour, and the right number comes from a load calculation. This hub's own index of 106,572 US property loss claims is why the two trades sit on one site.

How ac prices by tonnage works
- Read the model number on the old unit. Most manufacturers encode capacity in the model number in thousands of BTU, so 036 is three tons and 048 is four. That tells you what was installed, which is a useful starting point and is not the same thing as what the house needs today.
- Get a load calculation before you compare prices. A calculation on the house is what separates a genuine quote from a guess. It changes the equipment line, and it can change it downwards: a house that has had insulation, better windows or air sealing since the original install commonly needs less capacity than it did.
- Compare like tonnage at like efficiency. Two quotes at the same tonnage can be thousands apart because one is at a higher efficiency tier. ENERGY STAR set the tiers that mattered for the federal credit at SEER2 of 17.0 and EER2 of 12.0 for split systems, so ask which tier each bid is quoting.
- Watch the step changes in installation. Moving up a ton is a modest equipment increase and can be a large installation one, because bigger capacity can need bigger ductwork, a larger return, a heavier circuit and sometimes a different pad. That step is where the price jumps rather than at the box itself.
- Ask what the airflow will be. A system moves roughly 350 to 400 cubic feet of air a minute per ton, and ductwork that cannot carry it will cost you the capacity you bought. If a bidder proposes more tonnage than the last system without touching the ducts, ask how the air is expected to get there.
Replacing a damaged unit like for like, and the 2.5 ton ac unit installed price
An adjuster prices the capacity that was destroyed, so a claim replaces a three-ton system with a three-ton system. Where a load calculation shows the old size was wrong, the difference is an upgrade you pay for and it should be quoted as its own line rather than folded into the claim. Keep the model number and nameplate of the damaged unit: it is the evidence of what was there.

Common questions
- How many square feet does a 4 ton AC unit cool?
- There is no honest single answer, which is why the trade uses load calculations. The same capacity that suits a well insulated house in a mild climate will not hold a leaky house through a Gulf Coast August. Rules of thumb by floor area are how oversized systems get sold.
- How much is a 5 ton AC unit installed, against a 3 ton?
- The equipment difference is usually smaller than buyers expect, and the installation difference can be much larger, because larger capacity can require larger ducts, a bigger return, a heavier electrical feed and a different outdoor pad.
- Can I put a bigger unit on my existing ductwork?
- Only if the ductwork can carry the airflow, at roughly 350 to 400 CFM per ton. If it cannot, the system will run at high static pressure, cool unevenly and shorten the compressor's life, and you will have paid for capacity the house never receives.
- What does a 4 ton AC unit price installed include?
- It should include the equipment, the labour, the refrigerant line work, the electrical connection, the condensate arrangement, the permit and the removal of the old unit. Where a quote is only for equipment plus fitting, the rest of that list is still going to happen.
- Why does a 3 ton ac unit installed price jump at the next size up?
- Because installation is not linear. At certain capacities the line set, the electrical or the duct trunk has to change with the box, so the step between two sizes can cost more than the equipment difference suggests.
- Is a 3.5 ton ac unit cost installed halfway between 3 and 4 tons?
- Rarely. Half sizes are stocked less deeply and land either side of the step changes in installation, so the price follows what the install needs rather than the capacity on the label.
