Electric furnace replacement cost, and the heat pump comparison to ask for
An electric furnace is the least expensive heating appliance to buy and the most expensive to run, because it turns each unit of electricity into one unit of heat while a heat pump on the same power moves several, and that single fact is why a replacement quote should always be accompanied by a heat pump quote.
An electric furnace is cheap to buy and expensive to run, which is why the panel and the alternative matter more than the box. This hub's own index of 106,572 US property loss claims is why the two trades sit on one site.

How electric furnace replacement works
- Ask for the heat pump comparison. Where a house already has the ductwork and the circuit for electric heat, the same contractor can usually fit a heat pump that uses the existing air handler and keeps electric elements as backup. The running cost difference over a winter is the number worth seeing beside the two installed prices.
- Check the circuit and the panel. Electric heat is a large connected load, often on multiple circuits with its own disconnect. If the panel is already near capacity a replacement can trigger a panel or service upgrade, which is an ordinary electrical job but a substantial line on the quote.
- Size the elements to the load. Element capacity should follow a load calculation on the house. Oversizing electric heat does not damage the equipment the way an oversized compressor suffers, but it raises the connected load, can require heavier supply and costs more to install for warmth you never call on.
- Keep the blower in the decision. The blower in the air handler is what carries the heat and, later, the cooling. A variable-speed blower is quieter, moves air better against imperfect ductwork and is the part of an electric air handler most worth paying for if you may add cooling or a heat pump later.
- Confirm the thermostat can stage. Electric heat is usually staged so that elements come on in sequence, and a thermostat that cannot call stages either runs everything at once or leaves capacity unused. Ask whether the quoted thermostat matches the staging and whether the wiring for it exists.
Electric heat, covered losses and the replace furnace cost they meet
An electric air handler that has been submerged is replaced, not dried: water in the elements, the blower motor and the control board leaves an appliance that cannot be certified safe. A lightning strike or surge that takes out the control board is a covered peril on most policies. Wear and age are neither, so a unit that simply stopped is a purchase rather than a claim.

Common questions
- Is electric furnace cost lower than a gas one?
- Cheaper to buy and install, because there is no combustion, no flue and no gas connection. More expensive to run in most of the country, because resistance heat cannot beat one unit of heat per unit of electricity while a gas furnace burns a cheaper fuel and a heat pump multiplies its input.
- Should I replace an electric furnace with a heat pump?
- It is the comparison to make, especially where the ductwork and the electrical are already in place, because a heat pump can reuse both and cut the winter bill substantially. Ask for both quotes and the running cost estimate behind each.
- Do I need a new circuit?
- Not usually if you are replacing like for like and the existing supply matches the new element capacity. If the capacity rises, or the panel is already full, the electrical work becomes part of the job and belongs on the quote.
- How long do electric furnaces last?
- They have few moving parts and the elements are replaceable, so they often outlast gas equipment. That is also why replacing one is more often a decision about running cost and about adding cooling than a response to a failure.
- What sets the price of furnace replacement with electric heat?
- The panel, not the appliance. Electric furnaces are inexpensive to buy, and the cost sits in the dedicated circuit and any panel upgrade the elements need, which is why the same unit prices very differently between two houses.
